I maxed out my ISO for this one: ISO 6400...but I don't care about the grain. Just look at them look at one another. <3

I LOVE contrast in my photos. The deep shadows and the properly exposed subject. I think this is the power of spot metering. You get exactly what you want exposed properly while letting everything else fall into shadow for some dramatic effects with cool shadows.
I take lots of photos of my happy children. And for the most part, they are, but people, this is real life.
Shooting with DEPTH in mind is something that comes naturally now. I typically shoot at wide open apertures and generally start my metering at f/2.8. It's where I feel most comfortable shooting for the blurry foreground and backgrounds, making the subject pop off the photograph. I was just listening to a podcast the other day about how to create depth of field when even when at higher apertures. It's interesting to think about how close I, the photographer, am to the subject and how that changes depth of field. When I'm closer to the subject, the depth of field is actually narrower as opposed to if I shot the same photo, standing 10 feet further away from the subject. Also, focal length matters due to the compression of the lens. So now I'm not only thinking about the aperture I select, but the focal length as well as the distance I am to my subject which all change the DOF. Crazy! So much to think about! My style. I was trying to think what "My Style" really is. I'd say most of the time it's backlit photos during golden hour, but that's not our every day reality. So this is a little more typical. It's me following my children around with my camera capturing life as it happens. This was the first snow of the year and we experienced it at The Farm at Maple Lane in NY.
